Pergamon – Ancient metropolis where medicine became scientific

From far you can see the majestic acropolis of Pergamon on a hill over the modern city of Bergama, around 80 km north of Izmir or 150 km north of Kusadasi. From the acropolis to the Red Basilica and the most famous ancient Asclepeion

Our trip will lead us through the famous sights of Pergamon like Temple of Athena, Temple of Trajan and Altar of Zeus situated on the terraces of the acropolis. From here we’ll be brought to the lower city of Pergamon, which is now inside the modern city of Bergama. Here we’ll visit the monumental Red Basilica, approximately out of the beginning of the 2. century AD and, 270 meters long and 100 meters wide, one of the largest roman buildings you can visit in Minor Asia. First it was used as a temple and in byzantine time converted to a church. From here our way goes to the most important Asclepeion in ancient word. Asclepeion is coming from Asclepius, the god for medicine and healing – we know until today the Rod of Asclepius as a sign for medicine, and was a healing temple in ancient Greece and Rome. The Asclepeion of Pergamon sure became most famous because of the physician and philosopher Galen of Pergamon who founded here the basement of modern medicine.
